About AFD

What We Do

AFD is a UK based charity with an international reputation for the support of the poorest disabled people in developing countries.

Previously, we have done a lot of educational work in the UK to promote disability awreness and research into disability issues but the focus of our activities has recently changed to working wholly overseas. We have worked closely with local partners and established community based rehabilitation projects in rural India. We are about to spread our experience into Tanzania and Pakistan.

Recently we completed an educational project with disabled survivors of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We have built links with the few remaining rehabilitation professionals to help them develop new skills for the benefit of the many disabled and disadvantaged adults and children.

We run educational projects in the Uk and overseas. In summer 2001 we will run 4 week residential Certificate Course in Neurological Rehabilitation for Health Professionals from the UK and Overseas. We are currently planning rehabilitation training programmes to be held in India and further details will be available soon.

What Else Do We Do?

• We run one of the best stocked disability libraries in the UK – available to anyone who shares our enthusiasm for the subject.

• We support the renowned Centre for Rehabilitation and Engineering Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.

• We sponsor the Asia-Pacific Disability Rehabilitation Journal which reaches over 2000 people worldwide.

• We organised the 1st World Congress of Neurological Rehabilitation which attracted over 700 people from all over the world. The third World Congress will be held in Venice, 3-6 April 2002, For further details see the information on the WFNR website.
